DIY Sod Installation: A Step-by-Step Guide for Calgary Yards

Scott's Sod • June 30, 2025

Tired of looking at that patchy, worn-out lawn that’s seen better days? Want lush, green grass that feels good under your feet and looks even better from the curb? Want to do it yourself? Respect.

If you're in Calgary and ready to roll (literally), this step-by-step sod installation guide will help you prep, lay, and maintain your
new lawn like a pro. Let’s dig in.

A man is laying sod on the ground.

Step #1: Assess and Prepare Your Site

Before unrolling a single strip of sod, take a good look at your yard to determine which areas get full sun and which stay shaded to help you get the right type of grass.

Calgary’s soil can be a bit clay-heavy. If it’s compacted or full of weeds, it needs some TLC first:

  • Clear out old grass, weeds, rocks, and debris
  • Till the soil to about 4–6 inches deep to improve aeration and drainage
  • Add a layer of compost or quality topsoil and mix it in. Your sod’s roots will thank you
  • Rake everything smooth and level — no dips, divots, or bumps. It’s easier to fix now than later

Step #2: Select and Order Quality Sod

Not all sod is the same. Kentucky Bluegrass blends are popular for Calgary's climate because they’re cold-hardy, wear-tolerant, and bounce back fast.

  • Always buy fresh, local sod. Sod that’s been sitting too long dries out and struggles to root. Call ahead and plan delivery for the day you’re laying it down.
  • Order about 5–10% extra than your measurements. Having a few leftovers is better than coming short halfway through your yard.

Step #3: Laying Your Sod

Here’s the fun part (and the most satisfying):

  • Begin by laying your sod along a straight edge, like a driveway or fence
  • Stagger the seams like bricks so the joints don’t line up
  • Press each piece firmly against the last — no gaps or overlaps
  • Use a sharp utility knife to trim edges around flower beds or walkways
  • Once it’s all down, use a lawn roller to gently press the sod into the soil, remove air pockets, and encourage root contact

Step #4: Watering and First Mow

Water is everything during the first few weeks, so don’t skimp.

  • Right after installation: Water deeply so the soil beneath the sod is moist at least 3–4 inches down.
  • For the first 2 weeks: Water daily (or twice a day during hot, dry spells) to keep the sod moist and happy. You’ll know it’s rooting when you lift a corner and it resists.
  • First mow: Wait until the grass hits about 3–4 inches high, usually 10–14 days after installation. Mow on the highest setting to avoid shocking the new turf. Use sharp blades only.

Step #5: Ongoing Maintenance

Now that your lawn is in and growing, keep the momentum going by:

  • Watering: After the first couple of weeks, scale back to 1–2 deep waterings weekly
  • Mowing: Stick to the “one-third rule” — never cut more than 1/3 of the grass height at once
  • Fertilizing: After about 4–6 weeks, apply a slow-release, nitrogen-rich fertilizer to feed those roots
  • Maintenance: Watch for weeds, keep edges tidy, and celebrate the fact that you’ve officially joined the “good grass” club

A healthy, lush lawn doesn’t happen by accident—it requires the right care and maintenance. One of the most effective ways to promote strong, vibrant grass is through aeration. But what exactly is aeration, why is it important, and when should you do it? Let’s break it down. What is Lawn Aeration? Lawn aeration is the process of creating small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the root zone. Over time, soil can become compacted due to foot traffic, heavy lawn equipment, and natural settling. Compacted soil makes it difficult for grass roots to access the essential elements they need to thrive. Aeration alleviates this compaction, promoting healthier root growth and improving overall lawn health. The Key Benefits of Aeration Enhanced Nutrient Absorption – Aeration allows essential nutrients, water, and oxygen to reach the root system more effectively, leading to stronger, healthier grass. Reduced Soil Compaction – Frequent use of your lawn—whether from kids playing, pets running, or regular mowing—can lead to compacted soil. Aeration helps break up this compaction, allowing roots to grow freely. Improved Root Development – Deep, well-developed roots are key to a resilient and drought-resistant lawn. Aeration encourages roots to expand deeper into the soil. Thatch Reduction – Thatch is a layer of dead grass and organic matter that can build up on your lawn, blocking water and nutrients. Aeration helps break down thatch, improving soil structure. Stronger, More Resilient Grass – With better access to nutrients and oxygen, your lawn will be greener, thicker, and better able to withstand stressors like heat, drought, and heavy use. When is the Best Time to Aerate Your Lawn? Timing is crucial when it comes to aeration. The best time to aerate depends on the type of grass you have: Cool-Season Grasses (Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescue, Ryegrass): Aerate in early spring or early fall when the grass is actively growing. Warm-Season Grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine): Aerate in late spring or early summer when the grass is in peak growing season (These varieties are not common to see in Alberta). In Southern Alberta, because of our soil type, we recommend aeration be done at most once a year for most lawns. If you have installed new sod or grass seed recently, it is recommended that you wait around 2 years before aerating it for the first time. If you notice water pooling on the surface, thinning grass, or difficulty inserting a screwdriver into the soil, it’s a good indication that your lawn could use aeration. How to Aerate Your Lawn Aeration can be done using either a spike aerator (which creates holes by pushing spikes into the soil) or a core aerator (which removes small plugs of soil). Core aeration is the most effective method for reducing compaction and improving soil health. If you’re not sure how or when to aerate, hiring a professional lawn care service can ensure the job is done right. Final Thoughts Aeration is a simple but highly effective way to keep your lawn healthy, resilient, and beautiful. By aerating at the right time and following up with proper watering and fertilization, you’ll enjoy a greener, thicker lawn that stands up to the elements.
